According to Meat Loaf, storm clouds are swirling over the world this election season. But far out in the Atlantic Ocean, storm clouds of a different type are brewing: Hurricane Sandy is approaching the U.S. Eastern Seaboard with a vengeance. Widely described as the worst storm to hit the East Coast in 100 years, she has already claimed the lives of 21 people in the Caribbean.

The Category 1 storm with winds topping out in excess of 75 mph is expected to make landfall on Tuesday between the southern coast of Virginia and Long Island New York. Alerts have been issued and hurricane warnings stretch from the tip of Florida to the northern shores of Maine.

Advice for those likely to be affected is to prepare for widespread power outages by charging cell phones and portable lighting sources. Rainfall of between 3 to 6 inches is expected in the hardest hit areas, and the Weather Channel is also warning of snow on some higher altitudes along the Appalachian and Blue Ridge mountain ranges.

Videos from the Bahamas show extensive devastation.
