President Barack Obama is citing the impending landfall of Hurricane Sandy as the reason for why he will not attend a Florida campaign event on Monday.
“Due to deteriorating weather conditions in the Washington area, the President will not attend today’s campaign event in Orlando,” White House press secretary Jay Carney said in a Monday morning statement. “The President will return to the White House to monitor the preparations for and early response to Hurricane Sandy.”
Obama had flown on Sunday night to Florida, where he visited with campaign workers.
Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters on Monday that former President Bill Clinton will still attend event at the University of Central Florida in Obama’s place.
Obama was also scheduled to do an event with Clinton on Monday in Youngstown, OH, but the campaign on Sunday announced that Vice President Biden would take his place.
Asked on Sunday while campaigning in New Hampshire if he was worried the storm would impact voting, Biden said: “I hope it’s not going to affect voters by Election Day.”
Meanwhile, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Monday is scheduled to rally with supporters at State Fair Park in West Allis, Wisconsin.
