The underdog San Francisco Giants swept the Detroit Tigers in four games to win the World Series Sunday night, capping a postseason full of close competitions with one final 4-3 victory in extra innings at Comerica Park.

Giants infielder Ryan Theriot hit the winning home run at the top of the 10th inning, sending San Francisco fans to the streets to celebrate their second World Series title in the past three years.

“Tonight was a battle,” said Giants slugger Buster Posey, who homered in the sixth inning. “And I think tonight was a fitting way for us to end it, because those guys played hard. They didn’t stop, and it’s an unbelievable feeling.”

“They beat us, they earned it,” Tigers manager Jim Leyland told reporters. “We didn’t hit enough. For a team that was down to Cincinnati 0-2 and won, and then fought their way through the other series, they deserve it. They’re world champions.”
