Crossroads GPS is putting money into expanding the map, going up with a $1.4 million ad buy in Minnesota.

The ad targets President Barack Obama for the increasing national debt, citing a projection that the United States will owe $20 trillion by the end of a second Obama term.

The ad began running statewide today and will stay on the air through Monday, the day before Election Day.

“Another Obama term would mean a national debt of $20 trillion,” said Crossroads GPS communications director Jonathan Collegio in a statement. “President Obama has no credible plan to deal with the exploding debt, and America can’t afford that.”

In the final week, both Republicans and Democrats are making forays into the previously uncontested state, which was considered safely in Obama’s column. Former President Bill Clinton, an Obama surrogate, held two campaign events in the state on Tuesday, the same day that Republican vice presidential nominee Paul Ryan held an event in St. Paul.

Ryan will be back in the state holding a rally on Sunday.

The burst of activity in Minnesota follows a Star Tribune poll that found Obama’s lead over Mitt Romney falling to only three percentage points, 47 percent to 44 percent — down from an eight-point lead in the Star Tribune’s September Poll.

That three-point difference falls within the poll’s plus or minus 3.5 percentage point margin of error.
