If there is one thing we can learn from this mashup of every presidential campaign ad from 1952 to 2012, it is that they are all pretty much the exact same. (The video comes from Hugh Atkin, the brain behind “Will the real Mitt Romney please stand up?” and countless other genius supercuts this election cycle.)

Although the style of campaign ads may have changed– fewer cartoons now, but the music is just as cheesy as yesteryear– the rhetoric is essentially the same. There are only so many political metaphors that can come across to the average American household in one minute or less.

Just about every presidential candidate from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Barack Obama thinks America is just super great… but it could be better; they all have a “plan;” the country is headed in the “wrong direction”; lots of politicians think it’s “time for change” (ahem, Jimmy Carter and Barack Obama) – but most of all the country “can’t afford four more years.”

It’s time for a fresh start, a new beginning — according to every politician, ever.
