Independent former Gov. Angus King will be the next senator from Maine, replacing retiring Republican Sen. Olympia Snowe.

A popular former Governor, King easily bested his competition – Republican Secretary of State Charlie Summers and Democratic state senator Cynthia Dill.

King is expected to caucus with Democrats in the Senate, though he has repeatedly refused to say definitively which party he would vote with.

In 2008, King supported Obama for President, and in 2004, he supported Democratic Sen. John Kerry. In 2000, he supported George W. Bush.

The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee never endorsed Dill and essentially ignored her candidacy, in a move most interpreted as a tacit nod of support for King.
