Unexpected disappointment reigned over the Romney campaign Tuesday night — the fireworks literally did not go off.
Fully prepared to celebrate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as the next president of the United States on election night, the campaign planned to celebrate in part with a fireworks display on Boston Harbor within sight of the campaign’s party at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center, according to The Boston Globe.
A permit filed with the City of Boston, published by The Globe, shows that the campaign scheduled an eight-minute patriotic-themed fireworks display Tuesday night sometime between 7 p.m. and 12:30 a.m.
“Supervised display of fireworks on Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at any time between 21:00-00:30 hours on 11-7-12. The location is off Fan Pier. Fireworks are in conjunction with the Governor Mitt Romney Presidential campaign,” the permit reads in part.
By all accounts, the Romney campaign was confident they would see the fireworks by the end of the night.
“We went into the evening confident we had a good path to victory,” one senior Romney adviser told CBS News.
Atlas Professional Fireworks Displays, the company set to provide the $25,000 display for the campaign, never set off the fireworks, however, and by the end of the night Romney conceded to President Barack Obama.
“I don’t think there was one person who saw this coming,” the adviser added.
Instead of fireworks, Atlas employees packed up the pyrotechnics and took them back to their headquarters in Jaffrey, N.H.
