“Lack of action on climate change threatens to make the world our children inherit a completely different world than we are living in today,” said World Bank President Jim Yong Kim in a statement. “Climate change is one of the single biggest challenges facing development, and we need to assume the moral responsibility to take action on behalf of future generations, especially the poorest.”
Also last week, the United Nations Environmental Programme said an a temperature rise of 5.4 to 9 degrees Fahrenheit could occur this century unless action is taken soon.
“In Doha, governments must agree to the continuation of the Kyoto Protocol and close the loopholes that could give countries a free pass to pollute for years,” said Martin Kaiser of Greenpeace.
“At the end of a year that has seen the impacts of climate change devastate homes and families around the world, the need for action is obvious and urgent,” he added.
