Pending league approval ,the New Orleans Hornets will be changing their name to — drum roll, please — the Pelicans!
The pelican is the Louisiana state bird and can be found on the Louisiana flag and seal.
After New Orleans Saints owner Tom Benson bought the Hornets in April for $338 million, he said he understood fans’ problems with the name and would consider changing it.
Other name contenders were Krewe — what New Orleanians call a Mardi Gras association — and Brass.
But don’t throw away your Hornets jersey just yet: The name change has to be approved by the NBA.
