Bret Easton Ellis, screenwriter of Lindsay Lohan’s straight-to-Netflix “psycho-sexual thriller,” said that the only reason the Oscar-winning director of “The Hurt Locker” Kathryn Bigelow gets respect is because she is a “hot woman.”

The “American Psycho” author posted to Twitter early Thursday morning, “Kathryn Bigelow would be considered a mildly interesting filmmaker if she was a man but since she’s a very hot woman she’s really overrated.”

Three of Ellis’ novels — “Less Than Zero,” “American Psycho” and “Rules of Attraction” — were made into movies, none of which earned any Academy Awards.

Bigelow won best director in 2010 for “The Hurt Locker.” Her upcoming film, “Zero Dark Thirty,” about the hunt for Osama bin Laden, has been lauded by critics who have seen the film and is an early Oscar favorite. It has already been awarded best picture and best director by both the National Board of Review and the New York Film Critics Circle.

“Zero Dark Thirty” has been controversial since its conception, since Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal got unprecedented access to White House documents about the raid that killed the most-wanted terrorist in the world.

The release date of the film was pushed back until after the presidential election so that it wouldn’t be considered “pro-Obama.” Early reviewers, however, have said that the film is anything but.
