White House petition aims to end male-only military draft

In a 6-3 decision, the court ruled in the 1971 Rostker v. Goldberg case that the “the [Military Selective Service] Act’s registration provisions do not violate the Fifth Amendment.”

“Congress acted well within its constitutional authority to raise and regulate armies and navies when it authorized the registration of men and not women,” the court wrote.

The White House petition, launched Dec. 12, collected 43 signatures after it appeared the following day on the social media website Reddit. (RELATED: White House petition for Obama impeachment tops 28,000 signatures)

The organizer, identified only as “Nika C” — the White House withholds last names — has 30 days to collect 25,000 signatures before the Obama administration would be obligated to respond.
