A recent study found that 75 percent of world leaders are communicating through Twitter with either a personal or governmental account.

The Digital Policy Council, an international think tank, says in its annual report that out of 164 countries, 123 are on Twitter.

President Barack Obama had 25 million followers — more than any other world leader. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez came in second, with 3.5 million followers.

The study also found that in 2011, 42 percent of world leaders were on the social network; 33 percent of world leaders were on Twitter in 2010.

Since the service has increasingly played a major role in relaying current events and news, TechCrunch reported that “it makes sense that some of the people with the most serious of occupations are finally starting to come around to the value of the platform.”
