Survivalists plan large gun-centric fortress community in Idaho

A group of “patriots” is accepting applications for their planned fortress community in Idaho called “the Citadel.”

Citadel organizers envision their project to be a community where residents are bound by a desire to “live together in accordance with Thomas Jefferson’s ideal of Rightful Liberty,” which they have determined to mean “that neighbors keep their noses out of other neighbors’ business, that neighbors live and let live.”

“Marxists, Socialists, Liberals, and Establishment Republicans may find that living within our Citadel Community is incompatible with their existing ideology and preferred lifestyles,” the group — which claims no leader other than the “ideal of Jefferson’s Rightful Liberty” — explains on its website.

Those who wish to join in the community must fill out an application and agree to the “Citadel Patriot Agreement” of thirteen residency requirements — the majority of which deal with firearm competency and survival preparation. Potential residents must also go through an extensive interview process.

“Every Patriot selected to live within the Citadel Community will voluntarily agree to follow the footsteps of our Founding Fathers by swearing to one another our lives, our fortunes and our Sacred Honor to defend one another and Liberty against all enemies, foreign and domestic. All Patriots selected to live within the Citadel Community agree to abide all Constitutional laws, both Federal and State,” the Citadel website explains.

They expect each resident to be “bound together by; Patriotism, Pride in American Exceptionalism, Our proud history of Liberty as defined by our Founding Fathers, and, Physical preparedness to survive and prevail in the face of natural catastrophes — such as Hurricanes Sandy or Katrina — or man-made catastrophes such as a power grid failure or economic collapse.”

Over 200 families have reserved space at the Citadel so far.

The organizers have plans to house between 3,500 to 7,000 families “who agree that being prepared for the emergencies of life and being proficient with the American icon of Liberty — the Rifle — are prudent measures. There will be no HOA. There will be no recycling police and no local ordinance enforcers from City Hall.”

The plans for the community — which they expect to build in Benewah County, Idaho, starting this summer — include at least 2,000 acres surrounded by a defensible perimeter that is “inaccessible to tourists.” Each neighborhood will also have separating walls “dividing the town into defensible sections/neighborhoods.”

The Daily Mail reports that the group has already purchased 20 acres where they plan to build an arms factory to help fund the community. The Mail further notes that at the top of the Citadel’s website there is an advertisement for a gun retailer which urges “Get an AR…before it’s too late.”
