WASHINGTON — Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin dismissed suggestions that Ambassador Susan Rice deliberately misled the American people last year by saying the attacks on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi were because of a protest, saying that the American people were more misled when the Iraq War was justified by the supposed presence of weapons of mass destruction in the country.
“I do want to make one point for the record here about whether the American people are told everything … so that they can be fully informed,” Durbin said Wednesday at a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing on the Benghazi attacks at which Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was testifying.
“I’d like to refer to five words I want us to reflect on: Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. We were told by every level of government here that there were Iraqi weapons of mass destruction. It justified a war. … We are still searching for those weapons. They didn’t exist. Thousands of Americans lost their lives. We should have a hearing on that.”
