Is this the starting point of Soledad O’Brien’s exit from CNN?

Font Size:

See what I did there? I made a play on Starting Point, which is the name of her morning show. Yeah, Soledad O’Brien has a morning show.

You can be forgiven for not knowing that, since the rest of America doesn’t either. Check out Tuesday’s ratings:

If you’re not a numbers person, the short version is that nobody watches her show. She had a relatively good day on Tuesday, though, because she barely edged out CNN Headline News. You know, the one that’s supposed to be CNN’s sister network, not the other way around.

And now, as Erik Wemple reports:

Anchor Chris Cuomo is leaving ABC for CNN, his ultimate destination a key slot in a new CNN a.m. product. Erin Burnett, who anchors the 7 p.m. offering, is reported to be headed toward the morning as well.

Media watchers can do basic addition and subtraction, yielding the obvious question: Where does this leave CNN “Starting Point” anchor Soledad O’Brien?…

An unidentified person at CNN said that O’Brien is not granting interviews at this time. A statement released by CNN, which is “unattributed” to any of the network’s executives, says this: “Soledad is very important to the network, and we’re discussing various options with her.”

Ooof. “Discussing various options.” That’s never good.

Oh, but it gets even more delicious: CNN is canning her show because it’s “too ethnic.” If this were Fox News, we’d be hearing a lot of screaming about “dog whistle terms” right now.

I’m sure that Joel Pollak is too mature to gloat over Soledad’s misfortune, even after what she tried to do to him last March and how she tried to weasel out of it:

But as you may know, I’m definitely not too mature to gloat. Soledad O’Brien is a demagogic race-baiting halfwit, even by the standards of the mainstream media, and any bad news for her is good news for fans of the truth.

To paraphrase the immortal Nelson Muntz: HA-ha, Soledad O’Brien. HA-ha indeed.
