For a short while, it seemed Sen. Bob Menendez had outlasted the tweeter behind @MenendezMustGo.
Twitter suspended the anti-Menendez account Thursday night after it spent four days tweeting and retweeting links about the New Jersey Democrat’s unfolding underage prostitution scandal. But just hours after The Daily Caller inquired about its disappearance, the account was back online.
“The actions and behavior of Robert Menendez are a disgrace,” reads the account’s self-description. “Exploiting adolescents via prostitution? Robert Menendez must go.”
@MenendezMustGo attracted 235 followers and sent 449 tweets before it disappeared.
Although a large majority of the account’s activity on Twitter before Twitter suspended it consisted of retweeting links to articles about the Menendez scandal, a few messages were original.
Writing to Missouri Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, the account tweeted Wednesday: “@clairecmc : No one can tolerate a US Senator exploiting adolescent females via prostitution. Robert Menendez must go. #Resign #Disgrace #NJ”
In another tweet, @MenendezMustGo asked News12 TV in New Jersey, “@News12NJ : Will you include coverage of disgraceful Senator Menendez?”
Twitter spokesman Jim Prosser declined to tell The Daily Caller why the account was suspended and reinstated.
“We don’t comment on individual accounts for privacy and security reasons,” Prosser said via email. “Have you had a chance to read over our Twitter Rules? They detail situations in which accounts may be suspended.”
Prosser also did not respond to a follow-up email asking which of Twitter’s many rules the account holder violated.
TheDC examined Twitter’s posted rules, comparing them to the account’s activity as archived by Topsy.com. There were no tweets that seemed to crossed any of those boundaries.
Attempts to reach the person or persons behind @MenendezMustGo were unsuccessful.
