The day after being ordained grand marshal of Nascar’s Daytona 500 race, arbiter of irony James Franco has declared himself the head of Gay Town, the actor/ writer/ poet/ artist’s solo art show that opened in Berlin over the weekend.
According to the exhibit’s press release, “‘Gay Town’ explores a variety of themes that are central to Franco’s artistic practice, mainly issues related to adolescence, public and private persona, stereotypes and other societal concerns such as society’s preoccupation with celebrity.” And also probably some gay stuff.
The press release reminds us that Franco is a Very Important Person, as he created “many of the works in hotel rooms, makeshift studios and other temporary locations whilst completing other projects, mainly motion pictures.”
One of Franco’s Gay Town artworks is a cartoon image of Snow White showing off her bare ass with the the word “K-Stew” scrawled across her, an allusion to the media’s (rightful) crucifixion of actress Kristen Stewart and her affair with her “Snow White and the Huntsman” director, because life is very difficult for the rich and famous.
Another piece of Gay Town art is an image of Spider-Man with the words “Fuck Spidey” written across the superhero’s chest, because James Franco doesn’t give a f*ck about the movie franchise that made him rich and famous, or maybe because Spider-Man is definitely the worst superhero.
Franco recently premiered a totally gay film at the Sundance Film Festival last month. “Interior. Leather Bar.” (and yes, that is the actual title’s punctuation) is a pseudo-documentary in which Franco attempts to “re-imagine the lost 40 minutes from ‘Cruising’ [an ’80’s erotic gay thriller] as a starting point to a broader exploration of sexual and creative freedom.” We literally could not tell you what this meant if we tried.
While Franco still holds the keys to Gay Town, he will say “Drivers, start your engines,” at the Feb. 24 Daytona 500, which he is certainly doing ironically.
