Incompetent bookstore misspells ‘university’

The campus bookstore at Missouri State University bought and distributed a slew of book bags that fail to spell the school’s name correctly.

About half of the 18,000 bags — which were given to students for free when they picked up their books –have the words “Missouri State Univeristy” on them. The bookstore’s marketing team made the mistake, and approved the misspelled version when the vendor sent the design back to them. MSU will not be able to recoup the $34,000 it spent on faulty merchandise.

A perceptive student first spotted the misspelling, and notified bookstore authorities. But the store decided to continue giving the bags away—a decision the university deeply regrets.

“We would have come up with an alternative,” said Earle Doman, vice president of student affairs, in a statement.

The spelling mistake is just the latest in a line of administrative issues that have plagued the bookstore recently. The store’s previous director, Mark Brixey, was forced to resign after failing to account for $500,000 in missing funds. He had been keeping $81,000 cash in his office desk.

Brixey’s replacement said the misspelled bags were approved before she took over the job.
