North Carolina Congressman Walter Jones suggested Saturday that Dick Cheney should go to hell for taking the country to war in Iraq.

Speaking to members of the Ron Paul-affiliated group Young Americans for Liberty in Raleigh, the 10-term Republican lawmaker compared the former vice president to Lyndon Johnson, whom he said is “probably rotting in hell” for the Vietnam War.

“Congress will not hold anyone to blame,” Jones said. “Lyndon Johnson’s probably rotting in hell right now because of the Vietnam War, and he probably needs to move over for Dick Cheney.”

The young crowd applauded in approval.

Rep. Jones is known as both a military advocate — his district includes Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune — and an opponent of American military intervention.

“We can’t police the world anymore. We’re not the world power. It’s China. Our economy is in chaos,” Jones told The New York Times in 2011.
