WASHINGTON — Tuesday was the first day of oral arguments in the Supreme Court over California’s Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage.

While justices questioned lawyers and heard arguments inside the court, supporters on both sides voiced their opinions on the sidewalk outside the building.

“Everything that we believe is in the Scriptures,” said one supporter of continuing the ban on gay marriage.

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, strength, soul and mind, and love your neighbors as yourself. Here are your neighbors. Start loving them as God made them, not how you want them to be,” yelled a woman to a man dressed as Jesus with a sign with a Bible verse stating marriage is between a man and a woman.

While such debates were frequent and often featured raised voices, they remained civil. Oral arguments on the Defense of Marriage Act begin Wednesday and are expected to draw an equally large crowds of both supporters and opponents.
