Democratic Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s email urging supporters to donate to the One Fund Boston, which aids the families of Boston Marathon bombing attack victims, provides a donation link through the website of the official pro-Obama fundraising and messaging nonprofit, Organizing for Action (OFA).
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) drew controversy this week for sending out an email encouraging people to thank Boston’s emergency personnel that requires the email recipients to provide their email addresses, which can be used by the DNC for future political and advertising purposes.
Warren’s email, sent Tuesday evening, explicitly ties the Boston Marathon charity cause to a political operation.
“The OFA family knows how to work together to accomplish amazing things,” Warren’s email reads. “Let’s make a difference for the Boston Marathon victims. Your donation will directly help the families who need it most. Please make a donation now to The One Fund Boston: http://my.barackobama.com/The-One-Fund.”
Email recipients who click on the link are transported to the One Fund Boston’s main donation page at secure.onefundboston.org.
It’s unclear why Warren’s email links through through my.barackobama.com instead of directly to One Fund Boston, and Warren’s Washington office has not yet returned a request for comment.
Organizing for Action currently possesses the high-tech voter database that the Obama 2012 campaign used to identify and target likely Democratic voters in the last presidential election.
One Fund Boston, which is bankrolled in part by the private equity firm Bain Capital, co-founded by Mitt Romney, has raised more than $20 million in little over a week.
