70 percent support death penalty for Boston bomber

The vast majority of Americans support the death penalty for Boston Marathon bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll released Wednesday, 70 percent of Americans surveyed said they would support the death penalty for the bombing suspect if he is convicted. Twenty-seven percent opposed.

The breakdown of support for the death penalty remained relatively high when sorted out by party identification, with 64 percent of Democrats supporting the death penalty (35 percent opposing), 84 percent of Republicans in support of the death penalty (14 percent opposing) and 69 percent of independents (26 percent opposing).

Most Americans also supported the decision to try the bombing suspect in the federal court system as opposed to a military tribunal.

Seventy-four percent of Americans said they support the decision to hold the trial in the federal court system, with 19 percent opposed. Majorities supported the decision across party lines, including 80 percent support among Democrats (14 percent opposed), 72 percent among Republicans (22 percent opposed) and 73 percent among independents (21 percent opposed).

The poll of 1,000 randomly selected adults from April 24 to 28 has a sampling error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
