Former Republican Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee began his radio program a little over a year ago with much fanfare as a possible conservative alternative to industry juggernaut Rush Limbaugh. But his future as a talk radio show host is murky.
In an interview with Arkansas Business that was published on Monday, Huckabee said within the next month he would decide if his radio career was worthwhile.
“Within the next month, I’ll decide if I want to continue it or not. I know we will, but it’s just such an incredibly intensive process that I really have to decide that I want to spend that kind of time …” he said. “I’ve got to always weigh how much time I’m putting in it and what the return is. How long it will take to make it what I call hopefully disgustingly profitable. That’s what one always hopes for in a deal like this.”
Huckabee’s remarks come on the heels of news that Cumulus — Huckabee’s syndicator — and his noon Eastern time competitor Rush Limbaugh are on the verge of a breakup that could leave Cumulus needing a personality to fill that slot in 40 markets.
Currently, Huckabee’s radio program airs on 225 stations nationally.
