Late-term abortionist compares fetus to ‘meat in a Crock-Pot’

The pro-life organization Live Action released the most recent installment Wednesday in their undercover video series attempting to expose the late-term abortion industry.

The edited video the group released puts the spotlight on abortionist LeRoy Carhart, who was featured in “After Tiller,” a film which profiled the four abortionists in the country who perform third-trimester abortions, and was an “official selection” at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival.

Live Action sent two pregnant investigators to Carhart’s clinic in Nebraska — the first in December of last year, and the second in March following the February death of 29-year-old Jennifer Morbelli, who died of complications at Carhart’s Maryland clinic from the late-term procedure.

Watch:

“This video shows the inhuman practice that Carhart is involved in on a daily basis,” Live Action president Lila Rose explained to The Daily Caller in an interview.

In the first portion of the video Carhart explains the procedure to a a 22-week pregnant investigator. He says he is able to do an elective late-term abortion at his clinic in Germantown, Maryland. In Nebraska, abortion is banned after 20 weeks.

“We do a shot into the fetus to end the pregnancy the first day,” he explains. “If everything works right, they come out–you just deliver them and they come out fine. I mean, if, for some reason, that doesn’t happen, then we have to take them out in pieces.”

He also assures the investigator that he has never had to send a patient to the hospital.

The Live Action video then cuts to news of Morbelli’s death and reports that Carhart was unreachable when Morbelli needed assistance after the abortion.

Another Live Action investigator, who was 26 weeks pregnant at the time, met with Carhart seven weeks after Morbelli’s death at his Nebraska clinic. The audio recording of her meeting with Carhart is featured in the film.

In the video, Carhart explains to the woman that abortions for women are “not at all” uncommon after 26 weeks, and says that if the baby were to be born at that age there would be a 50-50 chance of survival.

He further describes the three day period of the late term abortion and what happens to the fetus inside the mother.

“It’s like putting meat in a Crock-Pot, OK? It doesn’t get–it doesn’t get  broke–it gets softer,” he says in the video, before explaining that if the woman is not able to deliver the fetus he will take it out in pieces.

If the baby survives, Carhart says that the baby will go to foster care.

He also speaks about Morbelli’s death.

“She was a lot farther along than you, and–but–and the coron–it was reported to the coroner and everything, and they said, ‘Yeah, she died, again, of complications of the pregnancy, but not from the abortion.’ Everything from the abortion went fine,” he says to the investigator in the video.

According to Rose, the video highlights not only the “brutality of the procedure” and the cavalier way Carhart approaches it, but also his dishonesty.

“What he says on the tape is an outright lie because he claims that Jennifer [Morbelli] died because of pregnancy and not because of abortion and even on her death certificate it says complications after abortion,” Rose said. “So he is pretending to a woman that he is such an expert, he is so safe for her, even after he just months earlier killed a woman in a similar position. So he is being dishonest with women in his clinic.”

Morbelli was 33 weeks pregnant. Her death certificate lists “Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation” as the cause of death “due (to or as a consequence of): ‘Amniotic Fluid Embolism following Medical Termination of Pregnancy’” and “Fetal Anomalies.”

“Carhart has claimed publicly that he does not do abortions in the later term in his Germantown clinic unless there is some serious defect for the child,” Rose said, “yet both of our investigators had perfectly healthy babies and that’s confirmed on the tapes that there is no ‘fetal indication’ and yet Carhart is arranging these brutal late term abortions for these perfectly healthy babies.”

In July 2011 a Washington Post profile of Carhart reported that the abortionist said that all of the abortions he has performed in Germantown involved fetuses with anomalies.

Rose said that more videos are coming, but would not comment on how many more would come from her group’s six-month investigation into the late term abortion industry. “[T]his is just the tip of the iceberg,” she added.

“These are potential criminal acts that are taking place and certainly acts that are endangering the well being of women and children,” she said. “This is where we are calling on U.S. attorneys and officials to get involved, state officials to get involved to make sure these practices are stopped and that women and children are protected in our country.”
