A 22-year-old Colorado woman described as newly interested in firearms was accidentally shot and killed by an AK-47-style rifle she’d recently bought a gun show.

Drawing on witness statements to police, Denver’s 7News reported that Anastasia Adair had been drinking with her husband and friends Tuesday night in the garage of their Federal Heights home when she went to her bedroom to retrieve her new rifle to show to her guests.

As she descended the stairs into the garage and handing the weapon to her husband, who was below her, the rifle discharged and a round struck her in the head.

Shane Adair, her husband, told police that he’s not even sure he touched the weapon before it fired.

The rifle fired a second round, but it didn’t hit anyone.

Anastasia Adair was pronounced dead at Denver Health Medical Center, where she was taken by ambulance.

Gun sales in Colorado have skyrocketed ahead of new laws that will take effect on July 1. One of those laws bans magazines that hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition. Most assault-style weapons are commonly equipped with standard 30-round magazines, which will still be legal to own after July 1 as long as they were purchased before the deadline.

The Adairs bought the rifle at the Tanner Gun Show in March, a police lieutenant told the TV station, and the couple had been firing it the day before Anastasia Adair was fatally shot.

Shane Adair told police the weapon had a light trigger.

Police told the Denver Post that they will be investigating how much Anastasia Adair had to drink.

“It’s not a good idea to be handling weapons while you’re intoxicated,” Federal Heights police spokesman Lt. Gary Toldness told the paper. “It’s always a bad mix.”
