Olivia Munn may be an international sex symbol by today’s standards, but in a new interview with Esquire, she admits she spent most of high school as a lonely teenager.

“All the kids were cliqued up,” she told the magazine. “I would end up eating with the old librarians.”

The star of “The Newsroom” appears bikini-clad in a series of photos for the magazine, and asserts pretty people can be funny, too. (RELATED: Olivia Munn’s hottest moments)

“I believe it was [Zach] Galifianakis who was saying something like ‘People who are attractive can’t be funny, because funny comes from pain.'”

Citing an abusive stepfather and moving frequently during her childhood, she says that believe it or not she, too, knows hard times.

“Humor and being self-deprecating and sarcastic was the thing that could break ice in every situation,” Munn says. “And so it’s a very antiquated idea to think that you can’t be pretty and smart and funny.”

Munn’s breakout role came in 2006, when she earned a co-hosting spot on G4’s “Attack of the Show!” She rose to prominence when she was named a correspondent on “The Daily Show.” She soon began appearing in films, including “Magic Mike” and “I Don’t Know How She Does It.” (RELATED: I Know How She Does It: With Olivia Munn!)
