Price might endorse in Georgia Senate primary, says his House colleagues might struggle

Georgia Republican Rep. Tom Price said he would not rule out a primary endorsement in the crowded Georgia Republican Senate primary, a race which features three of his colleagues in the House of Representatives.

“Maybe,” Price told The Daily Caller after a Christian Science Monitor breakfast, when asked if he would consider an endorsement in the race.

Three Georgia congressmen have already entered the Republican primary for the seat that Sen. Saxby Chambliss will vacate at the end of his term in 2014: Reps. Paul Broun, Phil Gingrey and Jack Kingston. Also in the race is former Georgia secretary of state Karen Handel, a known ally of Price. Plus, Price noted, there is “rumor of one or two individuals in the private sector getting in.”

Price, speaking at at the breakfast, cautioned that “it’s too early to give predictions,” since the primary is over a year away, but said that he expected his Republican colleagues in the House would have a tough time.

“I think the folks who are running from the House will have a bit of a challenge because … the popularity of Congress isn’t at an all time high,” Price said, in pointed understatement. “So I think they will have a challenge getting over that hurdle. They also will have a significant voting record that they will have to answer to. And for those outside, it becomes an easier thing to target.”

Price himself was considering a bid for the seat, but announced last month that he would run for re-election to the House.
