Maybe I’m naive? I was shocked to recently discover a lot of otherwise intelligent people whose opposition to immigration reform is premised on a sort of white supremacy.
That’s what my latest column at The Week is about.
As I predicted in the column, the obvious criticism is that I am creating a “straw man.” The problem, of course, is that prominent commentators either don’t believe this stuff, or are simply too smart to cop to it. These attitudes are mainly voiced on social media outlets, by the people cheering on the prominent opponents of reform.
In any event, to illustrate that this sentiment is, in fact, not an illusion, I present you with this Twitter conversation from as recently as … this morning (the last tweet at the bottom is the telling one):
Again, I am stunned by this.
Note: Though I personally support reform, there are plenty of legitimate reasons why one might oppose this specific bill. But there are also troubling reasons — and I think that it is incumbent upon all of us to call these things out when we see them.
