MSNBC host Chris Matthews apologized Thursday to NBC creative director and vice president Val Nicholas on behalf of all white people for a pair of police incidents Nicholas was involved in as a teenager.

The “Hardball” segment featured Nicholas along with MSNBC contributor Michael Steele. Nicholas recounted the racially-motivated incidents for “Hardball” viewers and said that the proceedings in the George Zimmerman trial brought back memories of those incidents.

At the end of the segment, Matthews expressed his regrets on behalf of all white people.

“We’re going to continue this conversation, gentlemen, privately and on television. I mean a lot of people out there — I’ll just tell you one thing, and I’m speaking now for all white people, but especially [those] who have tried to change the last 50 or 60 years and a lot of them have really tried to change. I’m sorry for this stuff. That’s all I’m saying.
