The protest took place six days after George Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder and manslaughter. Protesters believed that the trial unfairly plotted Martin’s race against him. They championed for a more post-racial society.

The group stressed the importance of individual activism, stressing that anyone can and should take action. A few protesters wore hooded sweatshirts, held Skittles and bore signs reading, “I AM TRAYVON MARTIN.”

“Now here’s a guy, a vigilante, that can shoot a young un-armed black kid in cold blood and the system says he doesn’t do anything wrong,” one protester said to the small crowd. “But this is the system we live in, this is our Department of Justice, not Injustice. But whose justice is it?”

More protests marches and demonstrations will be held in the nation’s capital throughout the weekend as the community expresses their discontent with their peer-run justice system.

“I think that it’s important to recognize that the a community is looking at this through the eyes of a set of experiences a history and doesn’t go away,” President Barack Obama said in a press briefing on Friday.
