On Wednesday afternoon, Fox News Channel announced that former Johns Hopkins neurosurgeon Ben Carson would be joining the network as a contributor.

“Dr. Carson is a brilliant neurosurgeon who has dedicated his life to healing others,” Roger Ailes, chairman and CEO of Fox News said in a statement. “He also has a broad perspective on what’s going on in the country and his wisdom and provocative viewpoints will make a major contribution to our network.”

According to TVNewser, Carson is scheduled to make his debut as a network contributor on “The Kelly File” at 9 p.m. ET. Aside from his medical career, Carson is known for a speech at the National Prayer Breakfast earlier this year that made him a conservative darling for criticizing President Barack Obama’s 2010 health-care reform law, while Obama was sitting just a few feet away.

Last week, however, Carson told a Birmingham, Ala. audience he had received a visit from the Internal Revenue Service following that speech and had been asked for several years’ worth of records.
