A new Business Insider poll released Wednesday found that Americans know alarmingly little about the budget, federal deficits and top-line economic indicators.

The survey, conducted by SurveyMonkey Audience, asked 500 respondents to write in an estimate of several different statistics including the U.S. deficit. It revealed that nearly 70 percent believe the deficit has grown larger compared to last year.

However, this year the Congressional Budget Office expects the it to be $642 billion, down from $1.087 trillion in 2012 — the lowest in five years.

The survey also asked respondents to estimate the annual budget deficit, which is $642 billion. Roughly 33 percent significantly underestimated the figure.
