A pro-life group is pounding Democratic Senate candidate Cory Booker on abortion “lies” ahead of his debate with Republican rival Steve Lonegan Wednesday night.

The Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life women’s group, accused Newark mayor Booker of lying about his support for “the law of the land as it is right now” with respect to abortion issues, citing documents revealing his past statements to progressive Washington-based organizations.

“Booker told NARAL he opposes current restrictions on taxpayer-funded abortion,” says the group’s latest ad, entitled “Cory Booker Lies About His Abortion Extremism.”

“Booker told Planned Parenthood he opposes current Partial Birth Abortion Ban,” notes the ad.

“I oppose the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act and the Supreme Court’s dramatic break from precedent in upholding it,” Booker said in a leaked September 6 endorsement memo he provided to Planned Parenthood, in which he also criticized President Bush’s Partial Birth Abortion Ban, which was upheld in 2007 by the Supreme Court.

“This bill prohibits the ‘dilation and extraction (D&X),’ method, which involves removing the fetus intact by dilating a pregnant woman’s cervix, then pulling the entire body out through the birth canal, from being used,” Booker said in the memo, describing lawmaker concerns that the D&X method increases the risk of lacerating the cervix.

“The D&X method helps prevent this outcome. Because the ban does not have a ‘health exception’; for a woman who might suffer serious medical complications from other procedures, many in the pro-choice community oppose the ban,” Booker said.

Booker still leads Lonegan by 16 points according to the latest poll. The special election will be held October 16.

“Steve Lonegan will school Booker,” said the Lonegan campaign, which touted Wednesday’s face-off as an impending “debate clinic.”
