In a long interview with C-SPAN in 1987, a 37-year-old Charles Krauthammer argued that the United States should leave the United Nations.

“I’m trying to say that because we hold the financial keys here we ought not to play the sucker as we have for the last 20 years and we ought to exercise that power,” the celebrated conservative columnist, who was then writing for the left-leaning New Republic magazine and in the midst of his personal shift from the political left to the political right, argued. “And I would say the most effective way to exercise it is to simply withhold our money and go home.”
