Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Tuesday dismissed the talk from his critics on the right that he’s a liberal Republican.
“I’m a conservative,” Christie told CNN’s Jake Tapper in an election day interview that aired Tuesday afternoon. “I’ve governed as a conservative in this state.”
“I haven’t tried to hide it, or mask it as something different,” Christie added.
His comments came as voters in the blue state are expected to support him overwhelmingly in his re-election against Democratic state Sen. Barbara Buono.
In a separate interview with Politico on Tuesday, Christie argued that he has governed as a conservative and the real reason conservatives think he’s a moderate is because of his work with President Obama during last year’s Hurricane Sandy, which occurred right before the 2012 presidential election.
“I think it all goes back to Oct. 31, 2012, that’s all,” Christie said.
Christie is expected to seriously consider a presidential run of his own in 2016.
