Social media can be treacherous* for a famous person, but Grammy-nominated warbler Josh Groban navigates it like an expert.
Last March, Groban ran afoul of some of his conservative fans when he tweeted the following about the Conservative Political Action Conference:
CPAC stands for Conservative Politicians Attempting Comedy right? — josh groban (@joshgroban) March 16, 2013
I remember seeing that at the time, and I didn’t really understand the big uproar. If somebody says you’re not funny and you get angry about it, you’re just proving him right.
But Michelle Malkin gave him a hard time about it:
.@joshgroban WHY go out of your way to diss conservative fan base? http://t.co/rw8nCx6a3B — Michelle Malkin (@michellemalkin) March 16, 2013
And then the two of them got into it, and it was this whole big thing. She kept calling him out, he defended himself, and eventually they both realized it was a waste of time and moved on with their lives.
Which is why it was weird to see this tweet from Groban the other day:
.@michellemalkin miss u bb — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 9, 2013
What brought that on, all these months later? Weird.
His follow-up tweet was even more perplexing:
I apologize profusely for that extremely offensive and insensitive tweet. I realize it’s the kind of tweet that can end careers. #sorry — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 9, 2013
Huh. Why is “miss u bb” extremely offensive and insensitive? Even if he’s being passive-aggressively sarcastic to Malkin, for whatever reason, that’s hardly a career-ender.
Groban then gave us this further update:
OMG IT DIDN’T SEND!!!! Hallelujah it didn’t go through!! OH SWEET LORD YES CAREER SAVED!!!! #nevermind — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 9, 2013
Oh, okay. Groban tweeted something that he immediately realized he shouldn’t have, either before or after “miss u bb,” but some technical glitch kept it from getting sent? Well, anybody who’s ever been on Twitter has an idea what that feels like.
Wonder what the tweet was about?
Later that day, Groban said:
My heart is heavy for the people of the Philippines tonight. Devastating. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
A fine and noble sentiment.
Say… aren’t Michelle Malkin’s parents from the Philippines?
Probably just a coincidence. But it sparked my curiosity, so I decided to ask him what had happened. After all, it’s social media. Might as well be social!
Your tour dates? MT @joshgroban I apologize profusely for that extremely offensive and insensitive tweet. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
I was unprepared for the incisiveness of his riposte:
@jtLOL your mom — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
Ouch!
Having been bested, I decided to man up, admit defeat, and try to form some kind of bond with my intellectual superior. And that’s how this happened:
.@joshgroban Well done. So what was the Typhoon Haiyan/@MichelleMalkin joke you almost tweeted? You can DM it to me, I won’t tell anybody. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
(Note: DM = direct message)
@jtLOL k — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban Acknowledgment received. I look forward to reading your Typhoon Haiyan/@MichelleMalkin joke. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL can’t DM you if you don’t follow me. Damn. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban Just did. Whew! — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL good going. Hold tight for that DM. Gonna be a great one. Thanks for the follow. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
You’re welcome. I look forward to your Haiyan/@MichelleMalkin joke. MT @joshgroban @jtLOL Hold tight for that DM. Thanks for the follow. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL you’re a sick man if that’s the kind of humor you want from people. I’m actually offended. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban Hey, it’s your joke. I’m a fan. Not of your music, necessarily, but you’re a funny guy. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban Does this mean you’re NOT going to DM me your Typhoon Haiyan/@MichelleMalkin joke? You’re changing your mind? — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL nice back pedal. Your making light of a tragic situation is just plain wrong, any way you try to twist it. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban Huh? You’re the one who almost tweeted a joke about it. I’m just curious what it was. I won’t tell anybody. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
Well, @joshgroban just DM’ed me. But as I promised, I’m not going to reveal the substance of it. A bit disappointing, but he did his best. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL @joshgroban He didn’t almost tweet a joke about a tragic disaster- and you know it. — Geraldine (@Gennyxxxx) November 10, 2013
@Gennyxxxx Then why did @joshgroban say he was going to DM it to me? — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL because the joke is on you, you word twisting, insensitive, angry man. — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
.@joshgroban I’m not sure why you’re saying that, but rest assured that I’ll keep my promise and won’t reveal what you DM’ed to me. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
@jtLOL you don’t have to I’ll reveal it for you. Please take my advice. pic.twitter.com/dbXTQ6GFTr — josh groban (@joshgroban) November 10, 2013
Good advice, @joshgroban. So help me out and DM me that joke you almost tweeted, like you said you would. I honestly will not share it. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
Unfortunately, Groban never followed up, and some of his more excitable fans became very upset with me. But that’s what I get. You know what happens when you assume: You make a ssu out of me!
I did try to make peace:
I don’t think @joshgroban or his fans like me very much, but I hope they keep in mind that I kept my promise. Have a great day, guys. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 10, 2013
I admire your passion, @joshgroban fans. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 11, 2013
Why was @JoshGroban thinking about @MichelleMalkin this weekend? What triggered that, after all these months? Guess we’ll never know. — Jim Treacher (@jtLOL) November 11, 2013
And we never, ever will.
So. That happened. I’ll give the last word to Michelle:
Here’s how to help with relief effort in Philippines http://t.co/ro4G2SdYAV — Michelle Malkin (@michellemalkin) November 10, 2013

*No pun intended.
