LOOK UPON THE DEVASTATION: The Mirror lands its first scalp

Actually, it’s not that big of a deal.

In the world of online journalism, things are often moving in a whirlwind.

The Mirror gets that and doesn’t wish to be the Correction Police (like that egghead imbecile Andrew “Dijon” Beaujon over at Poynter.)

But when a fact is inserted into the middle of a piece and sheds some serious new light on the entire story, doesn’t it deserve a little shout-out?

Today, BuzzFeed wrote a story about a Tea Party group that appears to be rather menacing. They want to support primary candidates against GOP “traitors” like House Speaker John Boehner or any R’s who voted for the shutdown deal. Only the story initially missed this fact: That the group has never spent any money against GOP incumbents. Roughly an hour after the story posted, BuzzFeed quietly added, “Despite raising more than $1 million in 2012, the group only spent around $27,000 in support of two Republican candidates last cycle, according to Open Secrets, and no money against Republican incumbents.”

This isn’t the most egregious add in the world. But shouldn’t they have alerted the masses?

Smith told The Mirror, “We meant to and forgot — has now been added, thanks for the catch (and thanks to Will for the add).” The Daily Caller‘s Will Rahn, head bowed and a fortress around his desk, could not be reached for comment.

The story now includes this: “Note: This story has been updated to include details of the group’s 2012 spending.”
