This Thanksgiving you may have more money to blow on ridiculous Black Friday sales, as gas prices are expected to be their lowest since 2010, according to the American Automobile Association.

“AAA estimates that most drivers will pay the cheapest gas prices for the Thanksgiving holiday since 2010,” the national auto club notes. “The national average is at the cheapest level of the year and should continue to drop in the weeks ahead.”

This is good news for holiday travelers, 90 percent of whom will be traveling by car this week to meet up with family and friends and feast on great big turkeys — though maybe not a fresh Butterball turkey over 16 pounds.

“Drivers can find stations selling gas for less than $3.00 per gallon in the vast majority of states,” AAA adds. “The decreased cost of gas will provide consumers with real savings that could be used for other purposes on the trip.”

AAA notes that although fewer people are expected to be traveling this year, they are expected to travel further distances than last year. The group estimates that 43.4 million people will travel — by any means — 601 miles on average this Thanksgiving, as opposed to 44 million people traveling 588 miles last turkey day.

“While the economy continues to improve, the sluggish pace of the recovery is creating uncertainty in the minds of some consumers and therefore AAA is projecting a slight decline in the number of Thanksgiving travelers this year,” said Marshall Doney, AAA’s chief operating officer.
