Last weekend, Yale University English professor Samuel See died in a New Haven, Conn. jail cell.
He was gay and had an estranged husband, Sunder Ganglani. See and Ganglani were wed in May. However, marital bliss quickly turned sour. By September, a court had entered orders of protection against both men to stay away from each other.
The Yale prof also seems to have marketed male escort services and webcam modeling on at least four different websites under the name “Ryan Cochran.”
A phone number linked to See, 34, appeared on the sites, reports the New Haven Register. It’s the same phone number listed on the September order of protection against See.
See’s middle name was Ryan, notes the New York Post.
It appears as though someone has been taking down the escort profiles since See’ untimely death. A cached version of at least one of the pages is still available, though. Here’s the NOT-safe-for-work link.
“I love sex and being with men,” the profile description of Ryan Cochran, “elite escort,” enthuses. “I can get into all kinds of sexual and social situations — just name your pleasure. I’m down to earth, humble, personally generous, and horny a lot of the time.”
There’s also a Facebook page for Ryan Cochran with images that appear to be Ganglani and See’s home address, notes the Register.
The events that led to See’s death began just after 5 p.m. on Nov. 23. Ganglani, 32, went to See’s residence in New Haven to pick up some of his stuff. He remained there for over two hours. An argument ensued.
An unidentified third person at the residence called police. When the cops showed up, they arrested both See and Ganglani.
Police say the English professor wasn’t happy about the arrest. He yelled “that it was his house and that he shouldn’t be arrested,” according to the Register. He fought with cops when they tried to handcuff him. “I will kill you,” he allegedly said. “I will destroy you.”
He was booked into jail around 9:15 p.m. that night. He turned up dead the next morning.
See grew up in California’s inland Central Valley and attended California State University, Bakersfield as an undergraduate. He later obtained a Ph.D. from UCLA.
Fellow students at UCLA described him as a talented writer, according to the Register. The main subject matter of his writing was sexual orientation in modern literature.
