Liberals going down one after another in free-speech controversies

With Martin Bashir’s reported suspension from MSNBC for inflammatory comments he made regarding crapping in Sarah Palin’s mouth, America is seeing the rise of a new trend. The last three Speech Code violators at the center of media frenzies have all been liberals on MSNBC or at The Washington Post.

Alec Baldwin, whose show “Up Late with Alec Baldwin” was canceled after he called a photographer a “cocksucking fag,” went down in a great fiery ball of P.C. fervor just last month.

“I dispute half the comment I made… ‘faggot’ is not the word that came out of my mouth — that, I know,” Baldwin insisted in his defense, rambling on in a conspiratorial bout of gay panic.

“But you’ve got the fundamentalist wing of gay advocacy — Rich Ferraro and Andrew Sullivan — they’re out there, they’ve got you. Rich Ferraro, this is probably one of his greatest triumphs. They killed my show. And I have to take some responsibility for that myself,” Baldwin said.

Richard Cohen, syndicated Washington Post columnist, outraged the left in November by suggesting that some people are disgusted by interracial marriage. Then he clarified to say that he was actually referring to conservatives who practice “tea party extremism.” They’re the ones who are disgusted by interracial marriage, he said, not him. But by then it was too late.

The Virus had gotten him.

It just doesn’t make any sense. Alec Baldwin, Martin Bashir, and Richard Cohen are liberals. They are the very scientists who discovered the faux-outrage gene in the laboratory and introduced it into the media mainstream. They are the ones who gave us Anita Hill vs. Clarence Thomas, Media Matters, the MSNBC firing of Pat Buchanan, the targeting of Rush Limbaugh’s advertisers over Sandra Fluke, the prosecution of George Zimmerman. They are the ones who created The Virus. And now The Virus has turned back on them.

Which means The Virus now has a life of its own. And liberals are standing directly in its path.

Which high-profile liberal will be the next Speech Code violator? What will Richard Gere say about Mexicans? Does Melissa Harris-Perry secretly detest fat people? How ethnic will the New York cab driver be who Rosie O’Donnell brawls with? And will Chris Hayes admit that he didn’t enjoy “Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire”?

Wealthy liberals, stay inside your indoor solariums and have your immigrant servants stand guard outside the gates. This is your worst nightmare, people. This is not a drill.

UPDATE: Martin Bashir has resigned from MSNBC.
