A Florida police officer was arrested and charged with assault after violently slamming a handcuffed inmate’s head into a concrete wall, smearing blood all over it.
Marion County Officer Charles Broaderick was arrested and held for 13 minutes before posting his $2,000 bail. He has been placed on unpaid leave as criminal charges progress, according to local news.
On October 8th, police arrested James Duckworth on suspicion of drunk driving. He was taken to the Marion County Jail, where the altercation with Broaderick occurred.
Duckworth was handcuffed the entire time, obeyed directions and was not combative, according to an affidavit. Even so, Broaderick told him, “You’re being treated how you’re acting. You’re acting like an [bleep], you’re being treated as an [bleep].”
What happened next was captured on video. Duckworth moves his lips — a gesture that Broaderick interpreted as spitting. The officer immediately grabbed Duckworth and slammed his head against the wall.
“You don’t spit at officers,” he yelled.
Broaderick kept his fist at Duckworth’s neck as the suspect slipped in and out of consciousness. Later, a group of jail personnel attempted to put a bag over his head–apparently to control the non-existent spitting. The blood all over Duckworth’s face and the wall made this difficult, however.
The police department decided that Broaderick’s actions clearly constituted assault, and has charged him accordingly.
