The 74 passengers of the Russian research ship M.V. Akademik Shokalskiy have been trapped in an ice pack off the east coast of Antarctica since Christmas Eve, giving one photographer ample time to snap some amazing pictures of the situation.

Photographer Andrew Peacock sent the photographs to National Geographic along with an email saying that everyone is safe and healthy, but “the mood is getting more frustrated by the day.”

Breaking the ice to free the ship has been unsuccessful so far, opening up the possibility of evacuating the ship’s passengers via helicopter – but not until the current high wind and snow weather conditions change. Until then, those aboard have taken to social media to share their experience with the world.
