Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden will be the next head coach of the Washington Redskins, ESPN reports.

He is the brother of current ESPN “Monday Night Football” broadcaster, and former Tampa Bay and Oakland Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.

Gruden replaces recently fired head coach Mike Shanahan, after a season where the Redskins finished a disappointing 3-13, losing their final eight games.

Owner Dan Snyder has now hired six head coaches in the last 15 years, according to ESPN.

Gruden spent the past three seasons with the the Bengals, all of which ended with short-lived trips to the postseason. In that time, however, Gruden is credited with improving the Bengals statistically in points per game, going from 18th to 12th to sixth during his tenure.

Gruden’s task will be to return the Redskins to the top of the NFC East division that they won in 2012.

Quarterback Robert Griffin III is coming off a forgettable sophomore slump of a season after serious knee surgery in the offseason and will be looking to rebound in 2014.

All eyes will be on the evolving relationship between Griffin and Gruden throughout training camp and into the regular season in wake of Mike Shanahan’s dismissal from the team.
