Alicia Gray is a former high school teacher in Alabama who was convicted on Friday of having sex with a 14-year-old student. She’s in jail now under the terms of a plea deal.

Before she was officially sentenced, Gray, 28, and her pastor created the video apology below.

Bucking a trend tending very strongly toward English and Spanish teachers, Gray was a math teacher at Mary G. Montgomery High School in Semmes, Ala. (near Mobile) last year when she had a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old boy.

In the YouTube video dated Jan. 10, she explains that she is making the same statement she made in court for everyone who wasn’t there to hear it.

The contrite teacher is introduced for a good two minutes by Mark White, her pastor at Deeper Life Fellowship in Mobile, Ala., which describes itself on its Facebook page as full of “life-giving, outward focused, passionate lovers of God!”

Standing in a very scenic location involving a pond, White explains how Gray has rededicated herself to her Christian faith.

Gray then appears after a title card reading “What is the difference between regret and shame?” She is sitting on a bench. She talks extemporaneously for about two minutes, then begins to read from a prepared statement.

“Of course I’m very sorry for my selfish actions and the choices that I made,” she says.

She explains her rationale for taking a plea deal requiring her to serve six months in jail. (She reported to jail on Friday, notes AL.com.) She will also be required to surrender her teaching certificate and register as a sex offender.

The teacher also talks quite a bit about sin, forgiveness, hardship, redemption and other staples of Christianity.

“Jesus has brought me to a place of peace, in which I am ready for the consequences that should befall me” Gray declares.

“I realize I’ve hurt many people, and I also realize the implications of what I’ve done.”

At the very end of the video, Gray and White embrace heartily and then there is a fade to black.

Gray’s student-teacher sex saga hit the news a little under a year ago. The married math teacher turned herself in after a warrant was issued for her arrest. She was accompanied by her husband and her attorney.
