A creepy species of sea anemone was discovered for the first time by a robot trolling Anarctic ice.
The species was discovered living upside-down in ice by a National Science Foundation robot. The new species, which survives off the ice, is similar to the kind of aliens that might be found in subsurface oceans on Jupiter’s moon Europa, according to a report by io9.com.
Arthur C. Clarke’s “2010” posited an inhabited sub-ice ocean on Europa. In 2013 NASA announced the discovery of “organic materials” in the surface dust of Europa, and Hubble telescope observations suggest vapor plumes on the surface. The European Space Agency intends to send its Jupiter Icy Moon Explorer to get closer images of the Jovian moons Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa in 2022.
