Obama promises he’ll close Gitmo this time

President Barack Obama once again promised to close Guantanamo Bay Tuesday night as he wrapped up a long speech on how he thinks he’s doing as president of the United States.

“With the Afghan war ending, this needs to be the year Congress lifts the remaining restrictions on detainee transfers and we close the prison at Guantanamo Bay – because we counter terrorism not just through intelligence and military action, but by remaining true to our constitutional ideals, and setting an example for the rest of the world,” Obama said.

His promise comes six years after he told “60 Minutes” that he would close the terrorist prison; three weeks after CNN pointed out that al-Qaida “appears to control more territory in the Arab world than it has done at any time in its history”; and two weeks after Turkish authorities arrested a Gitmo alumnus who is suspected of leading an al-Qaida cell in the country.
