Conservative commentator S.E. Cupp blasted the media’s “urgency and giddiness to get ahead of the facts” on Governor Chris Christie’s bridge scandal, claiming that the rush to judgement is driving the moderate New Jersey Republican into the arms of right-wing conservatives.

Cupp spoke on a panel to CNN’s Wolf Blitzer about a much-corrected New York Times story released Friday, which suggested that evidence tying Christie to direct knowledge of the bridge closures was forthcoming. The “newspaper of record” was forced to walk back that claim, after it became clear that former Port Authority official David Wildstein did not have the kind of incontrovertible proof he earlier claimed he possessed.

“The problem with these New York Times stories and the Democrat pile-on . . . there’s this urgency and giddiness to get ahead of the facts. And as Jeffrey said, the facts of the investigation will come out. That’s what will tell where this story goes. All this is doing, getting ahead of the facts, is shoring up his sympathy with the very people who trusted him the least: far-right Republicans.”

“Nothing has changed about Chris Christie’s positions between last year and this year,” she continued, “yet suddenly [the Conservative Political Action Committee] has decided he no longer is too liberal for CPAC. You’re going to see more and more of that over the next year if it continues the way it’s going.”
