In this week’s warning that civilization is obviously teetering on the brink of a quick and fiery end, an Alabama high school student is facing a suspension after she posted a selfie of herself — grinning from ear to ear — beside a donated cadaver.
The incident occurred on a biology class field trip on Monday, reports local CBS affiliate WHNT.
The unidentified senior attends Clements High School in the northwest corner of the state. The field trip was part of her biology class curriculum. The field trip destination was the biology department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), just over an hour away.
According to WHNT, the student broke a number of rules. For one thing, the sheets covering the cadavers were not supposed to be drawn down. Also, students were specifically told not to have any cell phones or recording devices during their tour.
A fellow student — also anonymous — apparently ratted out the selfie-taker by saving a screenshot of the now-deleted Instagram photo.
“We were notified via email this morning from a parent that this incident had occurred,” school district spokeswoman Karen Tucker told the local station.
Local police got involved on Tuesday, questioning Clements High students. It’s not clear what law, if any, the student broke.
The principal of Clements High, Keith Hairrell, would neither confirm nor deny that the selfie-taking student has been or will be suspended.
UAB has since released a statement about the incident, according to UPI. The statement bragged that the university plays “an important role in educating future scientists and doctors.”
“This kind of disrespect is unacceptable and very disappointing,” the statement said. “We will review our processes to ensure this does not happen again.”
