Michelle Obama encourages students to take ‘selfies’ to get out the word about federal aid

A first lady who encourages young people to take “selfies,” knows “what’s up,” Michelle Obama says in a new video encouraging students to sign up for federal student aid.

In the video for “Get Schooled,” a nonprofit aimed at getting more students to go to college, Obama offers tips to students about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid, or FAFSA.

“Rule number one: Don’t leave money on the table,” the first lady says in a back and forth with an unnamed student.

“FAFSA is easier than ever to fill out, taking less than 30 minutes to complete,” the students says. “Just go to studentaid.gov.”

The pair go on to lament that a “million students who qualify” never fill out the forms and therefore never get the government funds to go to take their education further. Obama then encourages people to “get the word out” about all the free taxpayer money available to students who simply fill out the FAFSA.

“Send everybody you know to studentaid.gov. Text it, tweet it, take a selfie and Instagram it,” she says.

To which the student notes, “you must have kids.”

“I know what’s up,” Michelle Obama responds.

President Barack Obama came under fire last year when he snapped a “selfie” with Denmark’s Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Britain’s PM David Cameron, during Nelson Mandela’s memorial service.
