Canada’s largest newspaper, The Toronto Star, couldn’t handle the agony of defeat after the U.S. ice dancing team beat the defending Canadian champs in Sochi Monday.

After Americans Meryl Davis and Charlie White topped their Canadian rivals Scott Moir and Tessa Virtue by 2.56 points, Toronto Star columnist Rosie DiManno pouted, “If the fix is not in against Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, then I’m the Princess of Wales.”

Embracing the sore loser attitude, DiManno also took a swipe at the sport: “Strip away the sequins, wipe off the pancake makeup, delete the frozen-in-place smiles, and what’s left is a tawdry whore sport where the judges are the johns.”

She also referenced a report out of France that the Russians and U.S. judges have been conspiring to rig the Olympics so that the Russians would help the U.S. take the ice dancing gold in exchange for Russia winning the team skating event earlier last week, which they did.

The International Olympic Committee refused to investigate the alleged conspiracy, calling the rumors “groundless.”

It seems The Star, however, would rather stick to conspiracy theories than notice that the Americans were already expected to take the gold in the ice dance.

Davis and White had edged out the Canadians at their last four matchups, including the world championships last season, which took place in Canada. The American pair also topped Canada at the team event earlier in the week at Sochi.

But DiManno has concluded that the judges just wanted to give the gold to the Americans because the U.S. has never won the event at the Olympics before, so “the Yanks would damn near have to fall on their backsides to blow it.”

But Davis and White didn’t fall on their backsides at the Olympics in 2010, when they received personal best scores yet still lost to Moir and Virtue.

The tables are turned this time, and it looks like the Canadians, at least this one, can’t take it.
